What is facial contouring?
A full, plump face can often be a marker of youth, but for some, plump cheeks and excess fat in the submental area can be a nuisance. Facial contouring is a procedure—or combination of complementary procedures—that can enhance and define facial contours to bring harmony to the overall face shape. A facial contouring plan may include buccal fat pad removal (the removal of excess fat pads from the cheeks) and/or submental liposuction for chin and jawline contouring. Liposuction may also be paired with internal skin tightening simultaneously, or a series of external skin tightening treatments following the procedure. The final result is more defined cheeks, improved facial contours, and a balanced, youthful appearance.
What are my facial contouring options?
When discussing options for facial contouring, your surgeon will always consider all the surgical and non-surgical options available to you. A customized plan will be thoughtfully created and tailored to ensure that you meet your aesthetic goals with maximum comfort and minimal downtime
What are the risks of facial contouring?
Facial contouring is extremely safe, and significant complications are extremely rare. However, our goal at FORM Face + Body is to make sure you understand what the surgery involves, including possible risks, complications and follow-up care. Some of the risks of facial contouring we will review with you include:
- Fluid accumulation
- Ongoing pain
- Salivary duct injury
- Facial nerve injury
- Asymmetrical facial appearance
Your consultation with your surgeon is designed to maximize your outcomes and minimize complications by ensuring that the appropriate procedure is selected and that you have a full understanding of your pre and post-operative instructions. Our office is a constant resource for you in this regard and will carefully guide you through this exciting experience.
Our surgeons perform all facial contouring surgeries in the hospital or at our private operating facility. Your experience will vary depending on the procedures being performed, but surgery usually takes one to three hours, is performed under general anesthesia and allows you to return home the same day.
Buccal fat pad removal is performed via an incision on the inside of your mouth, through which your surgeon will strategically remove the correct amount of buccal fat pad to enhance overall facial contours. Submental liposuction involves the removal of excess fat from the chin and jawline using a small metal tube (cannula) to restore an aesthetically pleasing contour. Finally, skin tightening—which may be applied internally during liposuction, or externally following the procedure using the Venus Versa platform, uses heat to naturally boost collagen production and tighten elastin, allowing us to further sculpt the face.
Downtime following facial contouring surgery is usually minimal, but will vary significantly between patients and depending on the type of procedure performed. Your surgeon will provide you with customized guidelines to follow during your recovery, as well as oral pain medications and antibiotics based on your personal needs. In general, you can expect to return to normal activities by 1 week following your surgery, with moderate restrictions on heavy activity for an additional 2-3 weeks. Keep in mind it may take a few months before the full results of the procedure become evident.
