What is scar reduction?

Scars—whether the result of past acne breakouts, scrapes and scratches, or surgery—are reminders of past trauma that can affect the way we feel about our skin’s appearance. Scar reduction treatments with our Venus Versa™ technology or with SkinPen microneedling can effectively treat scars of all shapes, sizes, and colours. There are a number of technologies that can be employed to minimize the appearance of scars. In some cases, we will use microneedling treatments, creating tiny wounds which the body then works to heal naturally. This process stimulates collagen production to repair signs of damage, including scarring, on the surface of the skin. Additionally, laser light treatments can help reduce the redness or pigment of scars, helping them to appear more faded.

What are my scar reduction options?

Scar reduction can improve skin discolouration, hypertrophic scars (thick, raised scars that stick out above the skin), keloid scars (where an overgrowth of scar tissue occurs), or atrophic scars (pitted depressions in the skin, resembling deep pores). Our scar reduction technologies are safe for all skin tones. Good candidates for treatment are looking to improve the appearance of scarring on the face or body.

What are the risks of scar reduction?

Scar reduction treatments are extremely safe when administered by qualified practitioners for suitable candidates. Certain pre-existing medical conditions may prevent you from receiving treatment; this will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.

How long will the results of scar reduction last?

The results of scar reduction are cumulative, and will continue to improve with every subsequent treatment. The level of scar reduction will be dependent on the type of scarring, and the area being treated, but the effects achieved are permanent.

What to Expect From

Scar Reduction

Scar reduction treatments typically last no more than 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. In most cases, during your treatment, you will feel tiny pins on your skin followed by a little zap and a warm sensation. Scar reduction treatments may be slightly uncomfortable but not painful.

There is very little downtime associated with scar reduction, and you can return to most day-to-day activities immediately following treatment. The treated area will be red and warm, similar to a sunburn, which should subside within 24 hours; you can ease this by fanning or exposing the area to cool air. Keep the treated area clean and protected from the sun and avoid rubbing, scratching, or applying anything to the skin, even water, for 24 hours following treatment. After 24 hours, you may apply makeup and resume your regular skincare routine. Avoid vigorous exercise and hot baths or massages on the treated area for 48 hours following treatment. We recommend applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. In many cases, we will recommend the addition of a topical anti-scar gel or silicone gel sheeting to complete your treatment.

Caring for your skin at home is key to achieving the best possible scar reduction results. In addition to the use of a topical anti-scar gel, we recommend incorporating Skinbetter Science Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment™ in the morning and evening after cleansing to support nourished and healthy skin. We recommend waiting 24 hours after your in-office treatment before applying any products.
