Frequently asked

questions.

Is the first consultation necessary?

Your consultation with Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil is your first chance to relay your desires and discuss your goals. It is necessary for both you and your surgeon to discuss your goals, your expectations and the types of treatments or procedures you are interested in. Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil will answer all of your questions and suggest the best possible treatments for you.

What happens during a consultation?

During the consultation you will meet Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil and discuss the reason for your visit. After taking a full medical history and doing a full clinical examination, your surgeon will provide you with a comprehensive explanation of all options and work with you to design a completely individualized treatment plan.

Do I need to schedule a surgery at my first visit?

No. You can schedule an appointment for surgery any time after your consultation. If several months have passed or you have had a significant change in your medical history, you may be asked to return for a repeat consultation.

What happens if I still have questions after the first visit?

You can contact the office any time to ask any questions you may have. Dr. Somogyi and Dr. Jalil are always available by email or phone and happy to discuss more detailed questions by scheduling a second office visit. We want you to be fully comfortable and confident in your decision – no question should go unanswered.

Do I have to be photographed?

Photographs are a necessary part of your medical record and can be helpful to both you and your surgeon throughout your consultation and treatment. Your photos will stay securely protected within your electronic medical record and will only be shared if you sign a specific consent to share photos for training and research purposes.

If your consultation is about areas of your face you are asked to minimize any makeup you put on – this will help with more accurate evaluation.

Can I be accompanied by a friend or a member of my family during my consultation?

You are more than welcome to bring a friend or a family member for your support. Often this is helpful to help you remember the many aspects of your treatment that are discussed during your consultation.

Where do Dr. Somogyi and Dr. Jalil perform surgery?

Our surgeons operate at Clearpoint Health Surgical Centre Toronto, North York General Hospital, Women’s College Hospital, and the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute.

Taking into consideration the procedures selected, your desires and your medical history, your surgeon will recommend the best location for your procedure.

Can I choose where my surgery will be performed?

Your surgeon will recommend the best place for you to have your procedure. In many cases, multiple locations are suitable. If you have a specific request, please mention it, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Can I choose the type of anesthesia?

Your surgeon will always consider every option in deciding the best type of anesthesia for your procedure. Together with our anesthesiologist and your input, Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil will recommend local anesthesia, regional blocks, light sedation or a general anesthetic.

What are the risks of a surgical procedure?

The risks of surgery depend on the procedure and will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation and during pre-operative visits.

Through the use of the newest surgical techniques and established surgical proficiency, risks are significantly minimized. Moreover, by providing a full medical history and by following all the pre- and post-operative instructions, potential complications from your procedure are vastly reduced.

Who is the right candidate for plastic surgery?

The right candidate for plastic surgery is the one who has clear goals, realistic expectations, recognizes the limits of surgery and understands that all procedures have risks. The decision for a treatment should be exclusively yours and should be taken with full confidence and understanding. Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil will spend as long as needed with you to ensure that you reach this point.

What is the right age for plastic surgery?

There is no specific answer to this question. Dr. Somogyi and Dr. Jalil feel strongly that every patient and every problem is unique and should be individualized and treated accordingly. Each age group has its own preferences for specific procedures and the proposed treatments should be adjusted according to the patient’s problem.

What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

This is a fine line with great overlap between the two. In general, cosmetic surgery enhances and improves a healthy and functional part of the body while reconstructive surgery corrects a deformity, congenital or acquired, that can cause functional or cosmetic problems to a patient. The goal of reconstructive surgery is to restore the function and natural image of the body.

Dr. Somogyi and Dr. Jalil have received subspecialty training in both these areas and feel strongly that principles of each are required to accurately assess each patient’s concern and to provide long lasting, functional and natural results.

Where is plastic surgery performed?

All surgery should be performed in medical centres certified by the Ministry of Health that provide all the necessary facilities to ensure maximal patient safety. Dr. Somogyi and Dr. Jalil only operate in fully licensed and accredited facilities.

How many days of inpatient care are needed after plastic surgery?

Using modern techniques and the latest equipment, most procedures are performed faster and safer than ever before. These advances have allowed most of our procedures to be done as day surgery where patients return home the same day of surgery. If the surgery is extended, is of a more complicated nature, or if medical comorbidities dictate, a short inpatient stay may be required. This is possible in any of the locations where Dr. Somogyi and Dr. Jalil operate.

Where can I recover after my surgery?

Recovery is an important part of your treatment. Your surgeon will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions that you have to carefully follow to ensure the best possible outcome for your surgery.

In most cases it will be recommended that you return home the same day of your surgery to begin your recovery. However, if the procedure is more extensive, if medical needs require it or if you have little support at home, you may be given the option to spend some time as an inpatient in one of our facilities.

Who will care for me during my recovery?

If you return home on the day of your surgery, it will be recommended that you have a responsible adult present to help you during the initial recovery period. If you stay with us as an inpatient, nurses trained to care for post-surgical patients will look after you. In either case, you will have 24-hour access to Dr. Somogyi, Dr. Jalil, and FORM Face + Body staff who will fully support you throughout your entire surgical journey.

How long will my recovery last?

Every patient and every procedure is unique. Your surgeon will discuss your recovery plan in detail with you at your pre-op consultation. All instructions will be given to you in detail, including wound care, medication, restrictions and things to look out for.

When will I meet with Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil after my surgery?

Your surgeon will talk to you immediately after your surgery and review your procedure and post-operative plan. In most cases you will see Dr. Somogyi or Dr. Jalil in the office or at one of the hospital clinics within 3-7 days of your surgery.

What happens in case of a complication or questions I may have?

All possible complications or problems you may experience after the surgery will be discussed in detail. You will be given contact information to reach your surgeon or his staff at any time if you have any questions or concerns during your recovery.
