Facelift 101: Here’s What You Should Know if You’re Considering a Facelift

We often see patients with concerns about wrinkles, signs of aging, and with the way their face falls over time. They’re often curious about whether facelifts are right for them. Facelifts can offer incredible results for those looking to appear a decade younger—-with natural, lifted results! We know you have questions; so let’s explore some of the most common inquiries we get about facelifts to consider whether this surgery could be right for you.

What’s the right age to get a facelift?

The right age for a facelift depends on you as an individual; your goals, face shape, and the way your face is changing as you age. Collagen and elastin production starts to dwindle in our late 20s, so signs of aging grow more evident as we age. If you’re seeing noticeable signs like jowling, loss of definition along your jawline, it might be the right time to consider facelift surgery.

Invest in your future self today

By investing in a facelift at a younger age, you can take control of your beauty for years to come and enjoy your investment for longer. A facelift can address more extreme signs of aging, but it can also be a great way to prevent the deeper signs of aging from setting in; proactively smooth folds and avoid deeper creasing or sagging with the lift and improved contours of facelift surgery. Why wait? With traditional financing methods or the use of our financing partners, you can pay for your facelift in instalments. Waiting another 10 years might make the signs of aging more visible, and a great surgeon can provide natural-looking results. There’s nothing quite as fun as looking like you’re 40 in your 50s! Come see us to explore your options and we’ll guide you through the right plan to land at the outcome you’re hoping for.

Are facelift results permanent?

Facelift results are long-lasting, and can make you look 10 years younger than you do now. The way your results last depends on the way you take care of your body and your skin, how thoughtfully you honour the recovery period after surgery, and the natural way that your face ages.

Solutions for sagging facial skin

Facelift surgery provides a long-lasting result to fully reposition loose skin and tighten underlying facial muscles. But other non-invasive treatments can offer visible results to work alongside a surgical outcome for a more youthful look.

These include:

  • Injectables like dermal fillers to contour and add structure to a sagging jawline
  • Firming skincare like Skinbetter InterFuse® Face & Neck (used twice daily)
  • Non-invasive Venus Versa technology.

When determining the suitability of a facelift for you, your surgeon will evaluate factors such as your  skin texture, elasticity and thickness, your wrinkles and folds, and your natural facial structure and symmetry. If your visible signs of aging are more subtle and you’re under 40, we may recommend non-surgical treatments like injectables and laser treatments first. Looking to address specific issues like crow’s feet, wrinkles, folds, or a furrowed brow? You may want to consider neuromodulators to relax the muscles creating these folds instead.

Where are facelift incisions made?

Facelift incisions are typically made along the hairline, following the contour of your ear. At FORM Face + Body our surgeons thoughtfully place incisions where they’ll be maximally hidden by your hairline or in some cases underneath your chin. When you come in for your consultation, we’ll explain where the incisions will be made for your specific surgery so you know exactly what to expect.

Consider mini facelift, traditional, and deep plane facelifts

  • Traditional facelift surgery combines skin repositioning and tightening of the musculature under the skin to lift the appearance of the mid to lower face. This technique is also known as a SMAS facelift (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), and is an excellent procedure for common signs of aging like lower face sagging and jowls. This surgery focuses on the upper layers of tissue and musculature underneath the skin.
  • Mini facelifts are modified facelifts that focus more on the lower part of the face, from the jawline to the upper cheeks. A mini facelift might be a great fit for you if you’re looking for a more subtle surgical result or want to focus primarily on this part of the face.
  • Deep plane facelifts focus on the deeper, muscular layers of the face. Deep plane lifts also address facial skin, but they prioritize repositioning the muscles beyond the upper layers of skin and tissue to create a more lifted appearance. They are especially suited to patients with a lot of descent of the midface tissues or with deep nasolabial folds. While this procedure is more invasive and can have a longer recovery time, it can offer more dramatic results in the right candidate.
